Bright and early on Saturday morning Maura stood outside her apartment waiting for the Connelly limousine to arrive. She couldn't believe she had agreed to go on this outing with Emma Connelly and her daughters. But here she was.

When Emma had called a few nights ago and invited her to meet her daughters, Maura had felt intimidated by the idea. But she'd also thought it would be too rude to refuse. She assumed Emma meant they'd meet for lunch out, or perhaps at the Connelly mansion again. She'd be on her own this time, without Doug. But how hard would it be to make small talk with Emma and her daughters for an hour or so?

But Emma's plans were a bit more involved. She was, after all, a princess, Maura reminded herself. Emma wanted to introduce Maura to Alexandra, Tara and Maggie. She was also going to invite Jennifer Anderson, her social secretary, who had recently become engaged to Doug's brother, Chance. The two couples had spoken over the phone but hadn't met yet since their schedules were both so busy.

The group was booked for an entire day of beauty treatments at the Golden Palm, Chicago's most exclusive spa. "Then after lunch I thought we'd go over to Carrington Plaza for some shopping," Emma added cheerfully.

Carrington Plaza? Maura had read about the fantastic collection of exclusive designer shops in magazines, but had never dared set foot inside. She knew she couldn't afford as much as a belt in one of those places. And she couldn't even pronounce half the exotic names of the designers.

Well, it couldn't hurt to look, she thought. Even if she didn't buy anything.

"And guess what?" Emma continued. "When I mentioned the outing to Grant, he insisted on treating everyone."

"How generous," Maura said. Now she had no excuses left to decline.

"The girls loved the idea. They're really all so excited to meet you."

"I'm eager to meet them, too," Maura said honestly.

So it had been settled. But when Maura had told Doug about it, she hadn't been able to hide her nervousness at meeting his stepsisters. He'd tried not to laugh, but finally couldn't help himself.

"Maura, for goodness sake, you sound as if they plan to boil you in oil. I really think all Emma has in mind is a manicure and maybe a haircut."

"I'm just not the day-spa type, in case you hadn't noticed."

"Thank goodness for that." With an indulgent smile Doug took hold of her shoulders and gazed into her eyes. ' 'You can have a day out and pamper yourself a little. You work so hard. And you'll have even less time after the baby comes for this type of thing." He pulled out a credit card and forced it into her hand.
